Makepeace
A spirit of adventure in craft and Design, by Jeremy Myerson.
Among the most influential furniture-makers in the United Kingdom, John Makepeace is a multi-faceted craftsman, designer and educator. Besides creating a distinguished body of work, he also founded Parnham College, originally named The School for Craftsmen in Wood, in a Plantagenet manor house in Dorset.
The school offers a two-year course in the design, making, and marketing of furniture. The chapter on the Parnham College features furniture created by alumni, including David Linley. Makepeace's furniture reflects his dedication to preserving the environment. He uses predominately English hardwoods: oak, yew, holly, and sycamore. He shows that being environmentally conscientious does not denigrate the artistry of the furniture. Since the mid-1970's, Makepeace has concentrated on designing furniture, assigning the actual production to a single craftsman employed in his John Makepeace Furniture Studio.
The book is well illustrated, frequently giving multiple views of a single piece.
Hardcover, 208 pages, full color.
